Product Evaluation Essay: Grading Rubric- 2012 Workshop

(Sample Provided for 2012 Composition Symposium)

Introduction:

The introduction provides the specified audience with the necessary information to understand (1)why the writer wants or needs the product, (2)how the writer decided on their  two options, (3)and what criteria will be used by the writer to make their evaluation.  10 points
Body:

*

The topic sentence of each body paragraph introduces the criterion being discussed in that paragraph.  5 points
The importance of each criterion is explained at the beginning of each body paragraph. 5 points
Option A and B are thoroughly evaluated for each criterion.  10 points
Each body paragraph contains a concluding sentence that summarizes the evaluation for each criterion and relates back to the overall thesis of the essay.  10 points
Conclusion:

The conclusion summarizes the overall evaluation and announces the writer’s decision about which product will be purchased.  The conclusion should also provide the specified audience with a sense of finality.  10 points
Paragraph Organization:

The essay displays a logical organization of paragraphs established by following a preliminary outline and enhanced by the use of topic sentences containing transitional words and phrases at the beginning of each paragraph.  10 points
Paragraph Unity and Coherence:

Each paragraph maintains unity (staying on topic) and coherence (logical flow of ideas).          10 points
Style and Word Choice:

The evaluation essay is written in first-person prose using a moderately formal tone.  The essay also displays specificity in word choice and all words are used correctly.  10 points
Sentence Structure and Mechanics:

The evaluation essay contains no errors in sentence structure, punctuation, or spelling.  10 points
MLA Format:

The evaluation essay adheres to the conventions of MLA format as exemplified and listed on pages 448-449 of the Prentice Hall Reference Guide.  5 points
